Career Highlights and Achievements
Lewis began his career as a theatre director, working on numerous productions across Canada. He directed over 100 plays in prestigious theatres such as The Tarragon Theatre in Toronto and The Manitoba Theatre Centre. One of his notable productions, Hamlet, starring Keanu Reeves, was met with international success. Other significant stage productions directed by Lewis include:
The Tempest: In Toronto’s Earl Bales Park, in 1987 and ’89, a production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest was directed by Lewis Baumander at Skylight Theatre (he founded and ran Toronto’s Skylight Theatre for 10 years, where he reimagined classical works with bold, socially conscious interpretations).
- made Canadian theatre history when it reinterpreted Shakespeare’s play in light of Canada’s colonial and colonizing history, setting the action in Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) and featuring the work of aboriginal theatre artists Monique Mojica, Billy Merasty, and René Highway. This interpretation highlighted themes of colonization and cultural appropriation, making it an important production in the context of Canadian Shakespearean adaptations​ (Literary Review of Canada)​​ (UNB Journals)​.
Lewis also directed the yearly Industry show for the School of Comedy out of Humber College on the legendary Second City Stage for 4 years. The guest stars included Andrea Martin, Dave Folly, Don Ferguson, and Graham Greene. Earlier, he founded and ran Toronto’s Skylight Theatre for 10 years, where he reimagined classical works with bold, socially conscious interpretations.
Beyond the stage, Lewis has an extensive career in film and television. He directed episodes for the courtroom drama series Divorce Court and Marriage Counselor for CTV. He worked as a voice director for the popular animated series Sailor Moon. His work in film includes directing a feature film for legendary producer Roger Corman, known for his influence in the independent film industry.
